That is why Luther Pendragon is investing in research to understand uncertainty. Over the next few months, we are set reveal new insights into the impact that uncertainty is having on UK business leaders, including industry sector and geographic comparisons.
But for now, we provide our definition that highlights the potentially debilitating impact that uncertainty can have:
Uncertainty is the condition of not knowing what will happen or being unable to predict outcomes due to incomplete, ambiguous, or variable information. It reflects the inherent unpredictability of events or situations where future states cannot be determined with confidence.
Uncertainty is often intensified by the speed of change, which can outpace the ability to process new information, adapt strategies, or update expectations. This rapid evolution of circumstances contributes to a sense of instability and complexity.
Beyond its informational dimension, uncertainty also creates an uncomfortable psychological state. It can overwhelm emotional bandwidth, cloud judgment, and lead to a sense of paralysis or inertia.
Given the start to 2026, perhaps one of the few things that we can predict with certainty over the next few years is further rapid, and continuous, change. This research will identify some of the actions that can be taken to mitigate the worse effects of uncertainty.
At Luther, we work with organisations operating in complex policy environments to help them navigate shifts and remain on the front foot as priorities evolve. To discuss how we support energy clients, contact enquiries@luther.co.uk
